A "binaural beat" consists of two different tones, one played in your left ear, and the other in your right. The two tones are then combined by your brain, creating one completely different tone, with its own frequency. This frequency is what affects the frequency of your brain. The brain has four main frequencies in which it runs on. Each type of wave frequency is associated with four different stages of consciousness. Alpha Waves result in a feeling of relaxation and a clearer, more content feeling of consciousness (also while being awake.) This type of frequency is especially advantageous to have while studying or doing anything which requires deep concentration. Theta Waves cause the mind to dream, or enter a state of deep meditation when conscious. Again, these waves can be chosen deliberately with the help of certain meditation downloads. Finally, the lowest frequency waves, Delta Waves, result in a very deep, dreamless sleep. These waves have been known to promote health, and are very important in the mind's sleep cycle. Being able to induce these waves would prove to be a great advantage for the light sleeper.
